Is Your Garage Costing You Money?

Sometimes it seems like everything is gradually becoming more expensive. Fees through your bank, your cell phone bill, and maybe you’ve noticed your heating bill going up, too. While it’s possible that a rate increase took place with your utility company, there could be a more insidious explanation. If heat is steadily leaking out of your home, you’ll see that electrical bill creeping up. With an attached garage, there’s a good chance your garage has heat loss.

When you’re checking the garage, one of the first things you’re likely to do is examine the garage walls for holes and cracks. While that’s a good thing to check, a more common issue is faulty insulation. If the entire garage isn’t holding in heat, or if one wall is cooler to the touch than another part of the garage, you’re likely looking at insulation that’s faulty or not there in the first place. By adding exterior insulation, having an insulated garage door installed, or reinforcing insulation within the roof or crawl space, you should be able to trap heat where it belongs.

It doesn’t take much space for air to escape from the confines of the garage. Weather stripping is ideally supposed to create a seal between the garage or the floor. If that stripping is damaged or missing, which can be caused by erosion due to dry winter air, a draft will occur. By replacing that stripping as soon as possible, you’ll have a more comfortable home and lower heating bills.
